Update and Photos!

The Learn2Live NOLA team is extremely proud of how their hard work paid off during the Learn2Live Back to School & Family Expo! Over 300 students received book bags with free school supplies, more than 100 haircuts and beauty vouchers were given to students, and 100+ therapeutic massages were enjoyed as live local music made the crowd composed of New Orleans community families sing and dance along. If you haven't already checked them out, the rest of the photos from the Expo can be seen on the Learn2Live Facebook Page.

Many thanks to the sponsors of the Learn2Live Back to School & Family Expo including The United Church of Christ Justice and Witness Ministries, Beecher Memorial, Brown's Dairy, The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, Cafe Reconcile, Aura Barber Shop, Blue Cliff Community College, darkplay graphics, BFAM Music Group, and The Ashe Cultural Arts Center.

The team is already in the planning stages of next year's Learn2Live Back to School & Family Expo as well as developing more community events and programs to service and engage New Orleans' families. We look forward to offering parenting seminars, parent-child bonding activities, mini art camps, and homework help in the upcoming months.

BACK TO SCHOOL EVENT OFFERS FREE HAIRCUTS, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, AND HEALTH SCREENINGS

Event Features Performances By Local Artists, Workshops, & Outdoor Activities

The Learn2Live Back to School & Family Expo will take place at the Ashe Cultural Arts Center (1712 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard) on Sunday, August 8, 2010 from 9am to 6pm. The Expo, sponsored by the United Church of Christ (UCC) and various local contributors, will feature school supply giveaways, free back-to-school haircuts, and complimentary chair massages for parents. Event planners hope to supply up to 500 New Orleans students with book bags, notebooks, pencils, and other back to school necessities. Students will be able to participate in outdoor activities and arts workshops while parents attend mini-seminars on family health, after-school programs, and resources for New Orleans area families. In addition, local music artists have signed on to provide entertainment to expo participants and to speak to students about education and active involvement in the arts.

“Our goal is to effectively impact the students and families of New Orleans by supplying them with the tools and information necessary to have a successful school year,” says Krystle Sims, one of the planners of the Learn2Live Back to School & Family Expo. She and partners LaVita Tuff, Nate Cameron, Jr., and LeBraun Robinson are local entrepreneurs, artists, and students who have seen a need present in the New Orleans community and are seeking to fill it. Robinson explains, “In many communities, all parents need is the right information to make healthy choices for their families; we’re bringing all that information to them in a fun, family-friendly way.”

The Learn2Live Back to School & Family Expo will be a fun, family-oriented event that will teach parents and students how to have a more successful, healthier school year.
